Zayo Group to expand in smaller cities. AFS Acquisition on the way !

Zayo group, a privately held company that builds and operates fiber-optic networks in 23 states covering 141 markets, which includes 50+ metropolitan cities across the U.S. has recently acquired American Fiber Systems, another american Fiber Network service provider which had been facilitating Dark Fiber and lit fiber to businesses for years.

American Fiber Systems(AFS) was established back in 2000 and had been into Dark and lit fiber business for quite sometime. AFS didn’t really grow its network roots in main metropolitans but smaller and mid-sized townships which were ignored by bigger market players due to lack of immediate demand from those areas. AFS has so far built and bought around 800 route miles fiber-optic cable in Atlanta, Idaho, Reno, Nashville, Las Vegas, Kansas City and Cleveland among other cities.

Now that higher bandwidth demand is fast picking up from every corner of the country, AFS laid networks gained more value and eventually caught the attention of Zayo Group, a huge player in Fiber network industry.

Zayo Group’s acquisition of American Fiber Systems is rumored to be around $190Mn deal but no official word about it so far. This deal will supposedly give a big edge to Zayo group over its competitors as they will now have their networks laid out not only in large but also mid-sized and smaller towns and cities as well.

However, the deal isn’t closed yet and it might take 3 more months for the deal to get through all the formalities and regulators.
