Last Day For “Google Fiber” Nominations. Is Your City In The Race ?

Today is the last and final day for U.S. cities to nominate themselves for being the home to Google’s first ever experimental fiber optic network which would deliver an ultra speed 1Gbps internet speeds to the chosen city (or cities) via FTTH(Fiber To The Home).

And U.S. cities and their residents are literally justling to catch Google’s attention by any possible way. Use of online Social media and community fests are one of the prevailing activities that are being used by the city residents and government officials to bring Google Fiber to their city.

Even those cities which were short of the min. residential population(50,000 residents) have teamed up with neighboring cities to nominate a club of cities together, thereby fulfilling the basic requirements for getting Google Fiber to their households.

So far, online campaigns comprise of Facebook fanpages, Youtube videos, city specific websites and more. Some of the campaigners really seem to be going crazy and not to forget, some of the mayors as well. And they’ve a valid reason too.

Becoming the first city in the world that would be exclusively powered by Google Fiber and would enjoy 100 times faster internet speeds is a boon in itself, for consumers as well as local authorities. The chosen city would be distinctly marked on the world map and would be identified all over the world with its extraordinary citywide network infrastructure. The chosen city would surely walk a generation ahead of the other cities in terms of technology and all this would trigger accelerated growth of real estate, civil infrastructure, public facilities and overall standard of living of the city. People would do anything to buy a home in that Google city.

Let’s just quickly tell you about the cities that are active in the race to woo Google and become the test city for revolutionary Google Fiber network, with some comments over the buzz they’ve been able to create till date.

Starting with cities from South Florida, the enthusiasm among the residents isn’t that great. Cities have nominated themselves but the efforts to woo Google are somewhat tepid. The notable cities from SF are:

  • Miami Beach
  • Miami
  • South Miami
  • Cutler Bay
  • Boca Raton
There has been some appreciable efforts from the residents of Palo Alto in attracting Google to their city. Folks from Oakland city are also showing interest but it could surely be better than what they’re upto.
Five East Bay cities namely Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Concord, Martinez and Clayton have teamed up and have also named their group as Diablo Valley Five. Their clubbed nomination might just not work as the amount of buzz is pretty low from the cities at the moment.

Cities from Michigan namely Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Saline/Pittsfield Township, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids have also nominated themselves for becoming the Google Fiber City but we must admit that Grand Rapids is distinctly doing its crazy best and appearing to be one of the most active cities competing for Google Fiber. One can clearly witness the interest of residents from Grand Rapids all over the web and Google would surely make note of that. Detroit has astoundingly been pretty ordinary in its efforts to woo Google. Austin city wasn’t too special as well.

There’s been a lot of activity from the residents of Asheville, the largest city of Western North Carolina. The guys are buzzing about Google Fiber on all Social Media platforms, namely Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, blogs and making sure that they get noticed. And for a fact, Asheville is probably scoring the highest in Fan participation to get the word out and bring ‘Google Fiber’ home. Here’s the Ashville, NC campaigning site.

Citywise Ranking

  1. Duluth, MN
  2. Grand Rapids, MI
  3. Topeka, KS
  4. Fresno, CA
  5. Sarasota, FL
  6. Memphis, TN
  7. Asheville, NC
  8. Madison, WI
  9. Greensoboro, NC
  10. Portland, OR

We must admit here that the folks at Ashville are really getting louder and making a distinct impact here.

Laws of Attraction

To grab the attention of the media and Google, of course, many city mayors did some fabulous stuff to get the newspaper talking. Let’s pile up the best gimmicks here.

- Duluth mayor Don Ness takes a dip in Minnesota’s icy Lake Superior for grabbing Google’s attention. Video below.

- Duluth, Minnesota also announced that every first-born male in the city would be known as Google Fiber, in case their city makes it.

- Topeka, Kansas changed their name to Google for the month of march.

- Sarasota’s mayor swam in a tank of water with bonnet head sharks. That’s scary!

- City of Columbia and Richland County are celebrating today as Google day friday

Here are some of the campaigning video from various cities so check them out.

To get more support from the city residents, several cities have got their campaigning websites. Here are a couple of them.

The Winner

It is not  yet decided if there will be only one or multiple cities that will be chosen to become Google Fiber cities but seeing the crescendo of enthusiasm among the U.S. cities, there could be a strong possibility of Google picking 2 or even 3 different nominated cities for building their experimental 1Gbps fiber network.

Has Google thought about how COLD or how HOT some of these places get? No wonder they want a fiber connection when forced to hole up indoors.
Now Ashville, Greensboro, Memphis, Portland and even Sarasota are temperate climes where the work could proceed all year long.
    Just saying. eJ ;-)

Asheville is one hell of a great place to live. Google would fit right in. All four seasons, hip downtown, progressive city council, strong local food economy, excellent mountain biking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, hiking, blue ridge parkway, tiger woods 1st US golf course, frisbee golf, and beer city usa winner.
